Subcarriers are then processed like real radio transmissions, but the whole bandwidth is sampled with an analog-to-digital converter (A/D) at a rate faster than the Nyquist rate (that is, at least twice the IF frequency).Ī tuner can also refer to a radio receiver or standalone audio component that is part of an audio system such as a hi-fi or stereo, to be connected to a separate amplifier. These are transmitted inside the receiver as an intermediate frequency (IF). use a wider frequency bandwidth, often with several subcarriers. More complex transmissions like PAL/ NTSC (TV), DAB (digital radio), DVB-T/ DVB-S/ DVB-C (digital TV) etc. Broadcast FM/ AM transmissions usually feed this intermediate frequency (IF) directly into a demodulator that converts the radio signal into audio-frequency signals that can be fed into an amplifier to drive a loudspeaker. Luxman T-240L stereo FM tuner (top) and L-235 amplifier (bottom)Ī tuner is a subsystem that receives radio frequency (RF) transmissions, such as FM broadcasting, and converts the selected carrier frequency and its associated bandwidth into a fixed frequency that is suitable for further processing, usually because a lower frequency is used on the output. Design: While we did test some inexpensive models that had a rather industrial look, we favored amps that would look nice on a living-room bookshelf. This article needs additional citations for verification. However, a couple of amps we tested incorporate a crossover that can filter the bass out of the main speakers for lower distortion and smoother, more even bass response. In most cases, this is a full-range output, which means your speakers still get the same amount of bass if you connect a subwoofer, and that can cause smaller speakers to distort the sound. Subwoofer line output: This feature makes it much easier for you to add more bass by connecting a powered subwoofer to your system-an appealing idea, considering that some of these amps aren’t powerful enough to produce much deep bass. Many amps add digital inputs for use with TV sets, computers, and CD players, and some include Wi-Fi streaming support. You can also connect more modern devices such as an Amazon Echo Dot or a Wi-Fi streamer. Connection options: All the models we tested for our latest update let you stream via Bluetooth and connect old-school analog-output audio devices such as turntables (although you may have to add a phono preamp), cassette decks, and CD players. We considered amps of all power ratings because our previous tests showed that even those models with the weakest power ratings were adequate for typical home listening levels. ![]() Power rating: This is the first spec most people consider when buying an amp or receiver. ![]() Above that price, we would have been getting more into amplifiers and receivers designed for audio enthusiasts, who may have technical demands and brand preferences that go beyond the scope of a guide like this.

If pounds and inches are used, a conversion factor of 703 (kg/m 2)/(lb/in 2) is applied. The BMI is expressed in kg/m 2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in metres. Additional metrics, such as waist circumference, can be more useful. Nevertheless, due to its simplicity, it has come to be widely used for preliminary diagnoses. Keys explicitly judged BMI as appropriate for population studies and inappropriate for individual evaluation. The interest in an index that measures body fat came with observed increasing obesity in prosperous Western societies. In this paper, Keys argued that what he termed the BMI was "if not fully satisfactory, at least as good as any other relative weight index as an indicator of relative obesity". The modern term "body mass index" (BMI) for the ratio of human body weight to squared height was coined in a paper published in the July 1972 edition of the Journal of Chronic Diseases by Ancel Keys and others. According to Lars Grue and Arvid Heiberg in the Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, Quetelet's idealization of the average man would be elaborated upon by Francis Galton a decade later in the development of Eugenics. Quetelet thought of the average man as a social ideal, and developed the body mass index as a means of discovering the socially ideal human person. Instead, it was a component of his study of l'homme moyen, or the average man. Quetelet himself never intended for the index, then called the Quetelet Index, to be used as a means of medical assessment. Īdolphe Quetelet, a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician, and sociologist, devised the basis of the BMI between 18 as he developed what he called "social physics". When used to predict an individual's health, rather than as a statistical measurement for groups, the BMI has limitations that can make it less useful than some of the alternatives, especially when applied to individuals with abdominal obesity, short stature, or high muscle mass.īMIs under 20 and over 25 have been associated with higher all-cause mortality, with the risk increasing with distance from the 20–25 range. Major adult BMI classifications are underweight (under 18.5 kg/m 2), normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9), and obese (30 or more). ![]() The BMI is a convenient rule of thumb used to broadly categorize a person as based on tissue mass ( muscle, fat, and bone) and height. The table may also show contour lines or colours for different BMI categories. The table displays BMI as a function of mass and height and may show other units of measurement (converted to metric units for the calculation). The multiplication and division may be carried out directly, by hand or using a calculator, or indirectly using a lookup table (or chart). The BMI may be determined first by measuring its components by means of a weighing scale and a stadiometer. The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is expressed in units of kg/m 2, resulting from mass in kilograms (kg) and height in metres (m). Body mass index ( BMI) is a value derived from the mass ( weight) and height of a person. ![]() First located in the Dolly Madison House a stone’s throw from the White House, NASA Headquarters has seen its share of history, including visits from Presidents Lyndon Johnson, George H.W. civil space and aeronautics policy throughout the agency’s history, setting in motion some of the most far-reaching and history-making events in the Space Age.
